Guardians,
During a recent visit to St. Petersburg, I had the opportunity to talk about modernization and how it impacts the surface community with LT Benjamin Goff who is the Commanding Officer of the CGC NANTUCKET. He wrote a very insightful paper (/Modernization.pdf) on his perception of the culture in the surface community and how it may need to change to fully embrace our modernized mission support structure.
Some of you may agree with his points while others will not. I encourage you to discuss this at your unit, respecting each other's opinions, and examine how our "cultural norms" impact our ability to accept change in our workplace.
As we continue to move forward with modernization, we are seeing success stories throughout the surface community but we are also uncovering problematic procedures or management practices that require a second look. That is what a "change-centric" culture is all about. Together, we can improve how we do business because at the end of the day, the goal is to be more operationally effective.
